About PIEA Membership

The Petroleum Institute of East Africa (PIEA) is the professional body representing the petroleum industry across the region. Established in 1999 following the liberalization of Kenya’s petroleum industry, PIEA provides a platform for collaboration between industry players, regulators, government institutions and stakeholders.

Our mission is to promote professionalism, advocate for a competitive business environment, develop industry standards, strengthen capacity through specialized petroleum training, and encourage responsible self-regulation.

Junior Corporate Licensed oil marketing companies operating within Kenya.

Honorary Member Individuals recognized for distinguished contribution to the petroleum industry.

Membership Criteria

Senior Corporate

  • Licensed downstream oil company
  • Minimum 2.5% inland market share OR qualifying infrastructure investment
  • Participation in multiple petroleum market segments
  • Pipeline, refinery or storage infrastructure where applicable

Junior Corporate

  • Licensed under the Energy Act
  • Active petroleum sales
  • Participation in retail, industrial, aviation or marine markets

Associate Members

  • Petroleum contractors
  • Transporters
  • Equipment suppliers
  • Inspection agencies
  • Consultants
  • Related service providers

Individual Members

  • Industry professionals
  • Current or former petroleum employees

General Conditions

  • Applications are reviewed by the Membership Committee.
  • Membership approval is granted by the Board of Directors.
  • Members must sign the PIEA Code of Ethics.
  • PIEA promotes diversity, professionalism and regional representation.
  • The Board reserves the right to approve applications in accordance with the Articles of Association.
